Katerina - A Recipe for disaster

In the episode titled Katerina we are introduced to a recipe that spells disaster.

But instead of a mixture of ingredients that simply lead to a hangover, the recipe Katherine described to Elena could result in the sacrifice of us of almost every Mystic Falls resident we know and love. Welcome to the latest twist in the most shocking show on television.

Before I delve into my "Katerina" review, let's recognize the work of Nina Dobrev.

Within the course of one hour, this actress portrayed Katherine as a human being in Bulgaria; Katherine as a pretend English woman in Great Britian; Katherine as a weakened vampire in present day; and a couple versions of Elena, one confident, the later one a tear-filled mess. That's gotta be some kind of record for a star of a show.

Overall, "Katerina" was a necessary installment, an essential information dump that left me furiously scrawling notes and trying to keep up.

It certainly wasn't the most action-packed episode in series history, as my one complaint would be that the mythology was mostly revealed in an expository manner. Really, we all just watched as Katherine sat there and spilled everything to Elena. But there was a whole lot to spill, and it left me with a number of points/questions. To wit:

Now we know why Elijah thought the Petrova bloodline stopped with Katherine: because her parents gave her daughter away. There could be any number of flashback episodes that take us through Elena's more immediate family history, as I'm left wondering: did her relatives also resemble Katherine? How many other dopplegangers are out there or have been out there?

The dopplegangers were created as a means to undo the sun and moon spell. But who created them? Because Slater - who I adored... a nerdy vampire, how funny/awesome was that?!? - said the goal is for vampires to break the curse before werewolves do, I'm hoping we receive more background on the feud between these creatures.

In case anyone missed it, the ingredients Katherine returned to Mystic Falls to collect are: a vampire, a werewolf, a witch, a doppleganger and the moonstone. No word yet on whether or not a partridge in a pear tree is also required.

Before the episode concluded, I had this strange vibe that specifically said there's always a last-minute twist. I thought I was proven correct when Elijah was revealed to be compelling Slater... but there was a twist on the twist. Dr. Jonas Martin is working with this Original. Do we also think Luka is in on it? Or being used as a pawn by his apparently evil father? (And what about Elijah breaking the UV-resistant glass with coins…it was quite cool wasn’t it???)

One problem with how Katherine simply listed her history, along with the basis for her return, is that we're left to ponder a major question: is she telling the truth? When she was first locked in the tomb, she wailed about needing to protect Elena - but we have to assume that was a lie now, right?

It will start to feel annoying and manipulative if Katherine's story changes from week-to-week. I have to believe we're getting accurate information this time, especially because it doesn't paint Katherine in a flattering light. Why make up that she wants to help Klaus sacrifice all these people?

As Katherine suggested, this all seems to be leading toward a major decision for Elena. There is one way in which she can save those around her: by taking the same action Katherine took over 500 years ago. By becoming a vampire.

Finally, speaking of Klaus, one final question before I turn this review over to reader responses: considering how greatly they've built him up - Elijah is the "Easter Bunny" compared to this Original, Damon's latest lucky lover said - who will they possibly get to portray this ultimate villain?

'Vampire Diaries' Star Nina Dobrev Not Ready For Elena To Become Vampire 'Just Yet'

We've heard plenty of buzz about whether Elena (Nina Dobrev) should ever turn into a vampire, but it wasn't until "Vampire Diaries" writer Kevin Williamson told E! Online recently that there was actually a pitch to make it happen, that we really started paying attention.

Kevin's comments totally caught us off guard, and we weren't the only ones. Nina was just as surprised as we were when we sat down with her last week.

"That’s news to me," she said.

Nina went on to say that she wasn't quite ready for Elena to join the ranks of Stefan (Paul Wesley), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Caroline (Candice Accola), especially since she's already got her hands full playing two characters—including a naughty bloodsucker.

"I have fun playing a human and a vampire so I don’t want her to turn into a vampire just yet," Nina said. "I’ve got my work cut out for me, and its fun to be human."

We can't deny that the possibility of Elena becoming a vamp is intriguing, but we're with Nina on this one; Katherine is enough vampire for us to handle right now. Although, who knows if we'll feel the same a year from now?

"Rose" : The Werewolf road leads to the Vampire Boulevard

Previously I may have said that season 2, episode 1 had it all, I now am altered to add Rose to the list. This week’s The Vampire Diaries episode Rose has it all, from a brotherly road trip to an whirlwind of a fight to an outpouring of information to an entirely new direction for our favorite characters... and that was all before Damon’s “just once” confession of Love to Elena……oh!!! and that perfect one-eye tear............just once.

Sorry, just need a moment……………

God That was overly dramatic of me, let’s get back on track shall we????

Few shows can pull off the mix of action, answers and affection that was on display this week on The Vampire Diaries.

I might tear up again if I focus too much on the latter, so let's stop and try to make sense of the mythology that came streaming out of Rose's mouth this week.

Elena is a Petrova Doppelganger, the second one actually. We already knew this, but it sounds like she isn't the only one. Or there have at least been others through the years, we come to realize this when Elena’s kidnappers Rosemary and Trevor reveal that our dear friend Katherine who was at the moment rotting inside that stuffy old tomb is in fact the first Doppelganger. Her blood can break the sun and the moon curse, which "the originals" are interested in doing, presumably so they can wreak some serious havoc. Now, that is what you call dropping a giant-sized bomb!

There's Klaus, too?!? Now that’s kick-ass baby….the Klaus in the book was the one who turned Katherine, wonder what he’s going to do here. This is both a point and a question. I can't fault a show that reveals so many answers on a weekly basis... but we were introduced to Rose, Elijah and Trevor all in the span of a few minutes. Then, we learn there's an even more powerful, ancient vampire out there? And he's also on the way?!?

Oh! I forgot to mention MRS.FLOWERS, the landlady of the place where Katherine was staying….now for those who haven’t read the books she was the owner of the boarding house where the hot Salvatore brothers where staying and turned out she was actually a witch………so been wondering what she’s going to do her…….

So, now we're left with a new set of enemies for the Mystic Falls gang to battle. And now they are a united front against whatever, or whoever, lies ahead. Stefan gave Damon a heartfelt speech and apology at the conclusion of the episode, which preceded the latter's moving words to Elena.

It looks like this sibling rivalry is truly over for a moment and that Klaus, Elijah and every other Original won't have an easy time taking what they want from Mystic Falls, not when the Salvatores have both found something to fight for.

Also,

The show has to be a little careful just having Bonnie cast whatever spell is most appropriate for a given situation. That can feel like a convenient way out for the writers, but at least there are grave consequences every time she does.

Did events between her and Jeremy tilt your feelings on this potential hook-up one way or another?

Can Caroline really trust Tyler? Why do I have a strong feeling her secret won't remain between the two of them when all is said and done?

The Most hilarious part - You're a werewolf. Say it. Think this line, from Tyler to Caroline, was a purposeful wink at Twilight?

I found the use of the word "pardon" interesting. It appears as though the Originals abide by some form of law or code.

Impressions of Lauren Cohan as Rose? She'll be around for awhile.

"Rose" : The Werewolf road leads to the Vampire Boulevard

It's a "MASQUERADE", a love parade, so won't you stay and dance with me!!!!

This week’s Masquerade was all about Katherine or better yet Stefan and Damon’s determination to kill her at the ball before she does something that result in a major fall-out. But you have to give it to them, only they could kill off two students, transform one character into a werewolf, and lock another inside a tomb.

In this week’s episode the gang tries to kill Katherine, a plan that only half-works and pushes the plot forward even more than in previous weeks. The Vampire Diaries isn’t a perfect show. It’s not even the best show on television right now, if we judge it by originality and characterization, but it’s probably the best paced and executed. There are no filler moments; everything is done for a reason.

Here we see the whole gang arming themselves up with all types of weapons and stakes necessary. Speaking of Katherine, she has a witchy friend in town. Katherine has brought her along so that, when she gets the moonstone back, her friend can break a curse. I wonder what curse that is. Speaking of Bonnie and Jeremy throwing flirty looks at each other, definitely did not see that one coming. Did any of you?

Side note: Did anyone else do a double take when they saw Jeremy in his suit and mask? Sorry to be so shallow, but the boy gets more gorgeous by the week!

Let not the Masked Ball wait any longer!

Katherine is there impersonating Elena. Bonnie gets vibes off of Katherine's witch friend, though she doesn't realize that they are in cahoots. Katherine doesn't take kindly to Stefan withholding the moonstone, and in order to show him how serious she is about wreaking havoc on the town, she paralyzes and then kills a girl in the middle of the party (Paralyzed from the waist down... and dead).

Caroline tricks Katherine into a room that Bonnie has spelled, in order to trap her so that Damon and Stefan can stake her. Which they do, only Katherine isn't the only one injured by the stake, Elena is too. Jeremy races to the room to try and stop the brothers from killing Katherine.

The stake misses Katherine's heart and a vampire fight ensues. Jeremy is able to stop the brothers just in time. Katherine informs them that she had her witch spell Elena and herself so that any 

damage she received, Elena would receive as well.

Bonnie finds Lucy (Katherine's witch) and gives her the moonstone. Lucy goes to Katherine and hands over the moonstone, only she is angry with Katherine for lying to her and spells it so that it renders Katherine helpless.

Tyler accidently kills a girl when she attempts to kill him, after Matt's attempt to do so fails. Tyler is now a werewolf.

Stefan goes to see Elena and tells her that Katherine is gone, only she still wants to take time and feel safe before getting back together.

Damon locks Katherine in the spellbound tomb, but not before telling him that Elena is in danger. He says he will protect her and then closes the tomb. The episode ends with Elena being kidnapped by a man in mask. Got to love a masquerade ball.

What am I to say Nina Dobrev stole the limelight for the episode be it as Elena or Katherine. I adore her as Katherine and her mini-breakdown upon being locked in the tomb, screaming, "You need me!" was fantastic. It's nice to see her really flex her acting chops and show a real range of emotion. I enjoy Elena, but Katherine's emotions have more range and, for me, that's exciting to watch.

It was also great to see more of Bonnie. I feel like her character has been put on the back burner in the last few episodes, so it was nice to see her stand front and center in a few scenes. Katerina Graham is a great actress and it was great watching her interact with the newcomer Lucy (Natashia Williams). Though Williams was only okay, in my opinion.

On a side note, I think I see a bit of a Jeremy/Bonnie romance coming up in the future. Not really sure how I feel about that, though I must admit that Jeremy has been growing on me these last few weeks. Perhaps if writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec do it right, it will be tolerable.

I felt bad for Tyler tonight. He's not my favorite character of the bunch, but killing someone in defense and therefore becoming a werewolf has got to be rough. I'm interested to see how he handles it all.

And what about Elena reasons not to get back him Stefan at the end? “How am I going to feel if one of you gets hurt because of me?” Jeez, could Elena be anymore self obsessed? Aside from everything else, Katherine wants the moonstone. There’s at least ONE thing that doesn’t link back to Elena, and yet she’s still just thinking about how she factors into everything. Sweetie, when your little brother is more mature than you it’s time to start worrying. I really want to like Elena, but she sounds more like a bratty school kid every week. The only bit of maturity we really saw from her was at the end, when she decided to wait before getting back together with Stefan.

This episode certainly answers a few question but raises a lot more.

• ·         Why does Katherine want to break the werewolf curse? Will we ever find out?
• ·         It wasn't just me getting a romantic vibe from Bonnie and Jeremy, right?
• ·         Seriously, being a student in Mystic Falls is more dangerous than being a porn star in a hotel room with Charlie Sheen.
• ·         Note to Stefan and Damon: when aiming to kill a vampire, perhaps you should not leave the man who was introduced to us as a vampire hunter at home. The brothers could have used you on the scene, Alaric.
• ·         Why does Elena need protecting and from whom?

A Devious "Plan B"

Here it is people Vampire Diaries episode 6 - A perfect combination of ingredients to make one smokin' & kinking episode. We've got everything from scheming, brooding, to love makin’ and love breakin’. A truly perfect combo.

We also saw the return of a certain Salvatore brother’s meaner side in one wince-worthy scene with a certain Lockwood.

Oh right, that’s something else we got, too.

A little death.

Now, that is OMG, I’m all for a little death and destruction in a TV show, especially one with a supernatural aura, it’s what keeps things interesting, keeps you coming back for another bite (pun completely intended) but I couldn’t help but truly feel for Mason Lockwood tonight and not only because he literally had his heart torn out but simply for the fact that he was a man being played and, I suspect, knew it, too.

But he was willingly being so for, what else, but love.

Love is another big plot driver on TVD, with a capital ‘L’ and a few of those fluffy hearts with wings fluttering around it. Tonight’s episode also gave us a good dose of it in various forms. We had Sheriff Forbes (remember last episode when she told Damon to keep Caroline away from her and was left in the Salvatore basement to de-vermainify. Yup i made up a word) and Caroline finally connecting on a mother daughter level and Caroline displaying some of the depth she once lamented to Matt that she wanted to possess.

We had the absolutely heart-tearing (your hands, our hearts, Julie and Kevin) break up between Stefan and Elena who finally came to the realization that to keep the ones they cared for safe, and each other, their only option was what Katherine demanded to begin with – their separation.

I have to pause here to note that when Paul Wesley delivers, he really DELIVERS and he does it good.

We also had the lesser observed but no less touching displays of it between Bonnie and Caroline, Jenna and Alaric and, much to my pleasure, between Elena and Jeremy who seem to have strengthened their bond tenfold since the events of the season finale.

So, what really happened in the episode.

We open with a scene split between Elena and Stefan in bed, and Katherine and Hot Uncle Lockwood in bed. Not the same bed, natch. There’s a lot of getting hot and heavy, making promises, and ‘you don’t trust me’s, the last of which, of course, are between Katherine and Hot Uncle, because Elena and Stefan trust each other implicitly.

There’s yet another community building event this week, when everyone descends to help paint the Lockwood house. Yes, another one. Stefan tells Jenna that he and Elena are taking a break. “That’s not what it sounded like to me,” she muses. Insert foreboding music here.

 

Bonnie talks to Elena about their friendship. I tuned out during this scene. Bonnie keeps getting holier than thou where vampires are involved, but she’s a witch. A witch. Not even a Wiccan witch, but a magical mystical mojo witch. Don’t throw stones when you’re standing on thin ice. Or something.

Jeremy goes to see Damon and tells him that he can get the moonstone from Tyler. He tries, and the brother’s Salvatore learn that Tyler’s given it to Hot Uncle. When Bonnie brushes Hot Uncle later on and sees a vision of him and Elena together, Stefan realises that it’s Katherine – and it’s her who wants the moonstone. But the one question that had been bugging us for like eternity "WHY?"

Bonnie takes down Hot Uncle with her mind powers. She and Damon bring him back to Le Casa Salvatore where Bonnie gets an impression of the moonstone being at a well. She sees Caroline and takes her along, texting Stefan on the way.

Jeremy’s been looking through a box of stuff Isobel’s assistant sent over and he’s found wolfsbane (its getting mythologicious every minute.Yes i invented this word as well), which is like vervain for werewolves. Damon uses some to torture Hot Uncle, and not getting any more information from him, decides to kill him. Jeremy tries to stop him, but Damon threatens him and makes him leave. FYI, the threat didn’t seem that scary. It’s easy to see he has a soft spot for Jeremy.

Damon turns his attentions to Hot Uncle. “You know I look at you and I see myself. A less dashing, less intelligent version.” “I love her,” Hot Uncle counters and Damon seems alternately bemused and sympathetic. “Katherine will only rip your heart out. Let me do it for her.” And then he does. RIP Hot Uncle Lockwood.

Meanwhile, Stefan goes to the well, Elena tagging along. He jumps in to look for the moonstone, but holy waka-moly vervain, and pardon the slang Fuck lots of the stuff, floating in the water and burning Stefan’s skin off. Caroline hears Elena’s shouts and rushes over, helping lower her into the well. Bonnie catches up, and they get Stefan out, but Elena stays behind to look for the moonstone. She finds it, but not before almost being bitten by snakes.

Stefan goes home and finds Damon wrapping up Hot Uncle’s body in a tarp. Then Damon, to Stefan’s annoyance, calls the last number on Hot Uncle’s phone. Katherine’s number. She’s surprised, but that turns to anger when she learns of Hot Uncle’s fate. “You’ve no idea what you’ve just done… Do you honestly believe I don’t have a plan B? And if that fails a plan C,” she continues on while Damon’s smile fades away. Katherine sure prepares well.

Back at the La Casa Gilbert, Alaric and Jenna are preparing dinner and being all lovey-dovey. I’ve decided that no one should ever be allowed into the Gilbert house because it’s obviously built from the remains of the Love Boat. Elena gets home, the phone rings, and Jenna hands it to her silently. It’s Katherine. Jenna is under her compelled control. Remember earlier Jenna heard Elena and Stefan together? Yeah, Jenna told Katherine. Oops-a-daisie.

While Katherine talks, Jenna stabs herself in the stomach. She’s rushed to hospital and she’ll survive, but Jeremy is beyond pissed. Elena just sees it as proof that Katherine will never leave her and Stefan alone, and she breaks up with him in a scene that was genuinely heartbreaking. I don’t even like Elena/Stefan and I felt a little teary. As she leaves, Damon tells her that he riled up Katherine and that he “wasn’t thinking, I didn’tthink.” She’s not even angry at him this time. Damon, however, looks broken.

Just to finish us off completely, we close on Katherine speaking to a man in her room and as details come clear we realize she’s compelling none other than Matt, informing him that her plans have taken a detour and she now needs a new werewolf, she directs Tyler’s best friend to go after him until he forces his hand into a killing blow and leaving our nerves frayed.

Interseting wasn't it? 

Waiting two weeks for this episode felt like years.

The next is going to be much worse in the waiting category, well here's goes nothing......

Down "Memory Lane" Again!

The Vampire Diaries showed that flashback aid to propel the story in season 1 so season 2 is also no exception to the rule. Aptly named "Memory Lane" the scenes belt out issues of mythology as well as revealing motivations and events that play out differently to how we have been told previously.

This was highlighted in the opening sequence when the flashback we are seeing is not a memory but a dream of Stefan’s implanted by Katherine to place doubt regarding his relationship with Elena and to further show his insecurities about Damon’s intentions towards Elena. So begins the dance of “Memory Lane” both literally (in the dream) and metaphorically between Stefan and Katherine. They are not the only characters playing games with each other as Damon and Mason are effectively dancing around their supernatural status for much of the episode now thats a very dangerous combination.

Manipulation and deception have been key weapons in the arsenal for many of these characters in this episode and it is hard to keep up sometimes with who is being genuine. It has been set up in such a way that the mistrust that we have is with characters such as Damon and Katherine, yet in this particular episode it is Stefan and Elena that act in a devious manner. In their fake argument/break up that incidentally felt real (a fact that was highlighted to show that this is a legitimate reason why they could break up in the future), I suspected that it was all for show and I’m glad to see that even though this is a reason why their relationship could end they are smart enough to know that Katherine is playing the eavesdropping Caroline. What it means that Damon also believes this rift to be real I’m not sure as we know he hates to be played (a fact seen later in the episode) but also at this point Elena still very much dislikes him so I’m not sure how he could use it to his advantage.

The reveal that it is Stefan that Katherine truly loves in the final flashback still has me suspicious of her motives, if she did love him then why has she left it so long to come back for him if he has always been ‘the one’? A thousand question with a big 'Q' there. Katherine’s power is also much greater than any vampire that we have seen and she is no longer affected by vervain except to her skin it would seem (how does that fit in anyway?), I wonder if the Petrova book that Elena got last week will shed any light on Katherine’s age and origin? After all back in 1864 she appeared to be running away from something or someone to cover her tracks by faking her own death.

The flashbacks also provide further information regarding the Lockwood’s, showing that George Lockwood also suffered from the same family curse as Mason and after some persistent questions from Tyler, Mason finally shares the trigger for the curse; killing a human. Who is it that Mason has killed?  With his ancestor George it was obviously during the Civil War that turned him in to a werewolf but with Mason it is all the more mysterious indeed. The fact that Tyler knows this information now will be a huge burden, one that will be fun to see what the writers do with; will we see Tyler endure the curse before the season is out?

Damon’s baiting of Mason about his condition was well played out by Damon, or so I thought and it turned out that Damon despite his best innuendos was the one being played by Mason. This was a pleasure to watch as it’s always enjoyable to see Damon trying to figure people out. Mason’s call for an end to the vampire/werewolf feud seemed genuine but the silver knife to the chest will surely end any hope of friendship/civility between these two, though seeing that Alaric and Damon are almost besties now shows that anything is possible. Like vampires, werewolves have spread myths about their weaknesses, this time being silver, but surely if silver doesn’t work something else will, or perhaps it only works when he is in a wolf state?

Another crucial point in this episode was the much talked about crucial face-to-face meeting of Katherine and Elena, no punches thrown or necks broken just intrigue and fear. Why they look alike is not the question that Elena should be asking according to Katherine (though I know it is a question that I would like answered) but what is the right question? What is established in this scene, as well as throughout the episode is that Nina Dobrev is doing a fantastic job with these two characters this season and making it totally believable that these are completely different people. I’m looking forward to when Elena and Katherine go head to head and the anticipation is building up by not having a throw down with them here and now.

I’m impressed with how this show continues to reveal parts of the big picture as well as propelling the story forward by leaving certain questions and motivations unanswered. So far it is hard to find fault with this season and I’m hoping that this momentum will keep building.

But as usual like the preceding episodes more question arise than the one already left to be answered. Does Katherine truly love Stefan? What of the moon stone? Has Damon screwed himself over with stabbing Mason? Can a vampire and human relationship ever work?

Down "Memory Lane" Again!

"The Wolf's Out Of the Bag!"

'Vampires & Werewolves' too interconnected to imagine one without the other. When there are vampires, there will surely be werewolves. This is what happens on The Vampire Diaries Season 2 Episode 3 appropriately titled 'BAD MOON RISING'. This episode shows the possible end of the relationship between Elena & Damon (alright that i'm sure is not gonna happen Damon is a persistent character) and a start of another one between Katherine & Caroline(spooky).


As Stefan has proven, and as he tried to teach Caroline throughout the hour, a vampire can fight back against his most carnal desires. 

The Hot Uncle Mason seems to be a good looking guy with his shirt off, as he tried to chain himself in because he knew a full moon was on the way. 

Alas, the effort failed. If even the best-intentioned werewolf can come oh-so-close to taking a chunk out of a vampire's neck, just imagine what an angry werewolf would do. No wonder Stefan's face in the photo above is a whole lot more scared than his "hey, it's Tuesday" face, huh?

 On another note ELENA, ALARIC and DAMON's road trip to DUKE UNIVERSITY proves very beneficial as they find out that Katherine hails from Europe, her original last name was "Petrova," and Damon suddenly believes she has a lot more in common with Elena there mere looks. Do you really think Elena acted so manipulatively, though? Let's see...

... Damon tried to kill Jeremy, and Elena sort of guilt-tripped Damon into giving her a book on Katherine's life. Sorry, D, but those two aren't exactly even. Give Elena a break, and also remember what Katherine said on the premiere: hating someone can be the start of a relationship, not the end. 

For Alaric all it takes to move on from your ex-wife and finally make out with the sweet woman who crushes on you is for the former to become a vampire, for you to take a road trip to her alma mater and for her pretty graduate student to make you realize how nutty you must be to remain stuck on such a self-centered, supernatural being. Good to know. Best of luck, Alaric and Jenna.


Stefan was wrong about Caroline. He said her personality would be heightened, and we saw flashes of magnified insecurity and humorous whining... but, in the end, Caroline actually proved quite selfless, forcing Matt to dump her, for his own safety. Stefan even admitted this was a step he couldn't bring himself to take with Elena, even though he knew he should.


Overall, "Bad Moon Rising" was an action-packed episode that shed light on the Lockwoods and werewolves in general. I'd have been content with it even before Katherine showed up and told Caroline they were gonna have "so much fun together." I certainly don't like the sound of this supposed development (Caroline & Katherine) not one bit.

Lets see what do we have next on the horizon?


Its episode 4 "MEMORY LANE" which airs on 30th September coincidently thats my birthday, i'm pretty much excited about the episode cause Elena & Katherine come face-to-face because in this episode Isobel assistant tells them that Doppelgangers don't need to be related by blood but they also have an upper hand with the originals they copy. Wouldn't it be funny to see an angry and pissed-off Katherine?
